Home for the holidays and bored out their minds, close friends Holly, Cali and Mel decide to go out and have some fun. Cali suggests they visit her uncle's mansion - he's away for the holidays and they'll have free reign over the estate and all of the toys therein. After a few hours of drinking, dancing, and wandering about the labyrinthine home, the other two girls discover that Cali's been keeping something from them - her uncle doesn't own this mansion. It belongs to a family she once babysat for. The girls decide to leave immediately, but before they can, the groundskeeper barges in, demanding they show themselves. While attempting to run away, the girls clash with him at the top of the main staircase. A brief scuffle ends when Holly accidentally shoves him down the stairs - breaking his neck and killing him. The girls begin to unravel as they debate what to do. Do they turn themselves in? Flee the scene of the crime? Or tell a lie they'll have to live with for the rest of their lives?

One child. One wish. Millions touched. Who would have thought a 5-year-old boy who fought leukemia would transform a city and a nation for a day? No one. Not his family. Not his friends. Not the thousands of volunteers who came from near and far to help make his wish come true. But it did.

Batkid Begins is a documentary that takes you back to November 15th, 2013, the day San Francisco turned into Gotham City, and the day the internet was nice. More than a billion people took to social media to cheer on BatKid, even President Obama! In all, the #SfBatKid and #BatKid hashtags reached more than 1.84 Billion people on Twitter and Instagram. This wish and this little caped crusader resonated with so many people, including us, and we wanted to find out why.

If the young man fulfills his uncle's request to the letter, he will inherit the 6 million left to him. If he doesn't, the money will go to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn. As Harry races from casino to nightclub to beach to bedroom with his dead Uncle, he is chased by a desperate optometrist, an avaricious showgirl, a mysterious Italian playboy and a trigger-happy murderess, as well as a young woman dead set on getting that money for the dogs. Guns go off, disguises go on, champagne corks pop, nightmares come to life, romance blossoms, dogs bark, and everyone sings! It's a zany, frothy, colorful and fast-paced musical comedy with a very happy ending.

On Her Own
USA - 80 minutes
Director: Morgan Schmidt-Feng
Executive Producer: Heather Feng-Yanu, Albert Chan

“On Her Own” tells the story of Nancy Prebilich and her family as they struggle to save their 5th-generation farm during the Great Recession. When both of Nancy's parents suddenly pass away, Nancy, her sister, niece, and nephews fight to stay afloat in the face of loss and financial instability.

“On Her Own” represents what is happening all across the U.S. as houses are foreclosed, families are forced to move for purely economic reasons, and small farms face ruthless competition from larger factory farms and land developers. Chronicling Nancy's personal journey over a 5-year span, this extraordinary story explores the roles that history and ancestry play in our present-day lives, asking: what happens when the cost of preserving family heritage is the family itself?

At 35, Ruth is single, friendless, and much to her family's chagrin, still scanning groceries at the dingy supermarket she's worked at since high school.  When Ruth is mistakenly thought to be pregnant, she suddenly feels the warm glow of the world on her for the first time in her life. She is finally special. Ruth plans on coming clean, but when her dad (James Caan) has a heart attack and he tells her that the promise of being a grandfather is the only thing keeping him alive, Ruth decides to continue to fake the pregnancy. Her mean spirited sister (Lisa Durupt) becomes jealous and makes it her life's mission to prove that Ruth's still the loser she's always been. Things get even more complicated when Ruth falls in love with a man (Paul Campbell) who seems to wants nothing more than to raise her unborn children as his own. With the help of her friend, Pedro (Danny Trejo), the hapless janitor at her store, Ruth must tackle ultrasounds, Lamaze classes, and finding a baby to birth.  Oh yeah, and dating with a secret the size of a basketball stuffed under her shirt. Can she get out of this without losing her job, friends, respect of her family, and the love of her life?  Written by Sonja Bennett who also stars, and directed by Jacob Tierney (The Trotsky, Good Neighbors), Preggoland is a comedy that looks at the lengths we will go, just to be part of the club.

Lake Los Angeles
(drama)
USA - 87 minutes
Director: Mike Ott
Writer: Atsuko Okatsuka, Mike Ott
Producer: Drea Clark, Atsuko Okatsuka
Executive Producer: Athina Rachel Tsangari
Cast: Roberto Sanchez, Johanna Trujillo

“Lake Los Angeles” will be the third film of Mike Ott's Antelope Valley trilogy, following Littlerock (2010) and Pearblossom Hwy (2012). As with the first two films, we explore the topic of immigration, isolation, and belonging. This time, we follow the story of Roberto, a middle-aged Cuban immigrant working at a holding house, and Cecilia, a 10 year old Mexican girl who ends up at that house with no family members to fend for her.Cecilia's story is inspired by one of Mike's former students who, as a child, crossed the border with his sister. The children turned the daunting journey through the vast desert into a game, playing 'hide and seek' from immigration jeeps and helicopters to make the trip easier to cope with.In a similar fashion, Cecilia turns the desert into her own fantastical world - creating characters and stories to make the hopelessness of the empty landscape a survivable habitat.Through navigating what was supposed to be both Roberto and Cecilia's promise land, they find a common hope in each other while journeying through the hauntingly beautiful and desolate world that is Lake Los Angeles.

Sam is a self-conscious yet stubborn 14-year-old girl who, like many teenagers, is searching for a place to belong. After landing herself into trouble, she is forced to work as a cleaner in the retirement home run by her mother. In between shifts at the home, she tries to find solace in the only place she can, the pool, but it becomes the place where deepest insecurities collide with her raging hormones. Her peers seem to be developing quicker than she is, which makes Sam too uncomfortable to change out of her bathing suit in front of the other girls, and it's this fear that leaves her with a wet bum. This is not how Sam imagined her year. But, as the days pass, she finds unexpected and unlikely friendships with two of the retirement home's residents, who end up teaching her a few things about growing up...and growing old.
